HARPS of Mt. Carmel
|
It was at the end of the nineteenth century-A Jewish immigrant from Lithuania immigrated to Israel and brought with him a very special gift.
Stepping into the Holy land to live, Eliezer Ben Yehuda told his wife, "from now on we speak only Hebrew". Hebrew was still at this time only being used in prayers and blessings, and in the reading of the scriptures. Eliezer began teaching his family Hebrew. He felt it was his calling to help to bring it back for everyday use since the Jews were now back in the land of Israel. In order to learn both the masculine and feminine parts of speaking Hebrew, he taught the children to speak to the dog in one and the cat in the other. One day some of the neighbors overheard the children speaking to the dog and the cat in the Holy tongue. This brought Eliezer great persecution, but he never wavered and stayed fast to his calling. Eliezer is considered responsible for bringing the gift of the Hebrew language back to Israel. |
